Promoting your Font skills with The Mistress of Time and Space

I have an idea, and it may be a good one. I am hoping to get ideas for several projects I am working on, and hoping to warm the cold fee that I have concerning font creation, all in one fell swoop. I do not have dollars and cents to offer participants, but I do have sense, of the graphical design type. I am hoping to highlight your own font creations, by using your font in the header for my blog "Cherish the Hellfire", which is a site that I use to showcase my own stream-o-conscious, which gratefully tends to swirl around the subjects of art, digital art, digital art creation and tools, open-source everything, and creating culture on a shoestring. I plan on using the freakishly huge image of myself as the background for the font that will be highlighted this week. I don't have all that many visitors here, and honestly don't post as much as I'd like, but that is all changing due to the fact that I now have a paying(ish) design job that will keep me grinding at the keyboard, wacom tablet, and edge of the chair(insert NSFW mental image here) for many hours a day for several weeks to come, so the posts will be flowing like cream filling around these *parts*. What have you got to lose, besides some self-respect, twitter followers (I say vagina and boobies a lot) and the 10 minutes it will take to submit a font?
Every single person that submits a font will get a whole (2 paragraph) blog post about them and their work, written by little 'ol me, and the 4 fonts that get chosen by a team of experts (at what they like..Sports racers, get your voting fingers ready) will be used as the header for this blog for one week each, with attributions and links to more of your work finding a home in the sidebar (at the bottom of this page). Free publicity, tweeting your skills to the world, and a permanent home in the heart of The Mistress of Time and Space.
What's not to love? Don't answer that....just start submitting.

I can't seem to get away from the type of designs I end up making when I'm not thinking about it too much. Enjoy the flames and bubbles. I'm sure there will be more to come.

The flames started as a design for my friends kids phone wallpaper, and developed into something much cooler than I thought.

This bubble and skull design was started for my nephews b-day present: a custom skateboard from my Zazzle store.

In order to make it fit on the whole skateboard (I didn;t plan very well) I had to stretch the design to it's limits, but I don't think I t really lost it's appeal. It's still a "bitchin' Camaro".

Didn't know this was a cover. Saw "Kill your Idols" this morning on Sundance Channel. Amazing documentary from 2004 about New York's "No Wave" music movement of the early 809;s. Funny thing< even though I was in Northern Illinois at that time, I was still very much influenced in my personal development by this music. Bands like The Swans, Sonic Youth, Foetus and Lydia Lunch assisted me with my personal creative visions in my paintings and music creation back then and still very much does. It's a strange thing to look back at that time and see it as a "movement", because when your in the middle of any movement, all you see is pure creation, and all creation is is living the change you want to see. "Being" change.

Angles and Goddeses: The Art that is Lae Morae

Lae Morae is one of my favorite types of artists. She doesn't only just produce creative artistic pieces out of anything get her magic little fingers on, she has turned living her life into a form of art as well. Morae uses many mediums to express her special brand of creativity, from traditional mediums such as ink and acrylics to less (more?) traditional methods such as making fibers for material, movement and dance, and even using her own appearance as a creative medium.

I first became aware of Morae's special brand of creative expression while hanging around Ze Franks forum for The Show in 2006. We met on a forum thread called Picture Association, where the object was simply to to post a picture that had some sort of association to the picture posted before it. Very simple premise, extremely creative process that also helps you see similarities between other peoples world views. It was on this thread that I discovered another woman who likes showing others beautiful things as much as she likes to show off the beautiful things she can make, A kindred soul, this was certain.

Lae Morae's line drawings of beautiful women have always caught my attention. Bold bright colors, strong lines, sensuous shapely women, what's not to love? Many of her line drawings are available as prints on her Deviant Art page and more will be added soon. Morae tells me she has many more completed works that just need a little digitized attention before we can get a peek at them.

I am one of the lucky people who Morae has decided to envision in line and color. She sent me three different original drawings of her vision of Cherish Hellfire! (yay!), and they are some of my most prized possessions. Here is one of my favorites from that series.

Morae's goddess paintings, acrylic on canvas. I'm pretty sure these won't be leaving her home anytime soon, but at least she shares them here with us. It's kind of difficult to capture the warmth that a painting on canvas has through photos, but we'll do our best.

I'll leave you with one more photo, this time, from Morae's flicker stream and it's hot enough to boil water at 100 meters, so be careful. Now you'll understand my appreciation on a whole new level.

Today, I installed Blipster. It's an Adobe Air app for Blip.fm.
Thin interface is rather sparse, so it need not be viewed at full-screen to use comfortable, and the sound is so much better then the web interface. Not sure why this is, but I whole-heartedly approve.

I also installed Tweet Deck and Seismic Desktop Adobe Air apps for Twitter and Facebook social networking. I spent a little time messing around with Seesmic Desktop but the UI for Tweet Deck really drew me in. Although they have many similar features, and either of them can be very useful desktop social networking tool, I simply preferred Tweet Deck because of the UI appearance options. I know that in the future, I will go with what ever app delivers font size increasing, as I have rather poor vision and hours of squinting at an interface with tiny fonts ranks right up there with chili peppers in the pee-hole, which honestly is more fun when you get to the cleaning up part.

I didn't include a screen shot of Seesmic Desktop as there are many to be found on the web, and my interface looks just like everyone's , since there are yet to be any appearance tweaking options.

I also installed Kosertech's ceTwit 2.1 on my HTC Touch Windows Mobile 6.1 smart-ass phone. Smart-ass, like "Yeah, but can your phone do *this*?" smart-ass. Not the best smart device by far, but it holds it's own considering it's reasonable cost.

I've tried about 6 different Twitter apps for Winmo 6.0 and 6.1, and so far this is the most stable on my device. PocketTwit is another very cool Twitter app, but has been pretty unstable on my particular device. I'll keep checking for Pocket Twit updates that will work well on my phone because that interface is very nice looking finger sliding fun.

ceTwit 2.1 is easier and more useful than 1.4. Replies, DM's, and Friends timelines all appear on the same screen and identify themselves with different colored backgrounds for each tweet type. ceTwit 1.4 required constant reloading to switch between all the message views, and that can be time consuming, which really matters when your on the run.

Stumbled onto an amazing photoblog that Coil House had linked to. Riot Clit Shave is a very eclectic photoblog that showcases many artistic, peculiar, occasionally humorous photos, though many of them are not attributed to anyone, and I'm not certain if the hostess of the blog is also one of the artists. Most of the photos posted there are SFW, but there are several that are not, depending on where you work, of course. Here are a few of my favorites from that site.

@PandaDementia from Creative Expression, Erotica is Thy Name inspired me to get naked, get wet, get bubbly, and record it for posterity. It's all her fault! I was just going to make a pbj, but she had to go and plant the seeds of my undoing, or at least, the seeds of my undressing.

I really like how the bubbles end up looking like little pearls all over my body when using soft-focus in my image editor. Considering the financial climate in my purse (it's hella freezing in there) this is a suitable alternative to using actual pearls. Unless, of course, you would like to shower my wet naked body with them just for the sake of art.

One may think it takes some sort of strength to post semi-nude photos of oneself online. I must protest thoughts like this. For some, getting naked and showing off is very much a weakness. I blame society! =P

This post is in honor of the zefrank/forum, and the chica that infected me and many others with visions of world where we make the linguistic rules, and we can bend them at our whims for our own amusement. Lilgothicfairy85 first mentioned this game on 11-21-2006, when @zefrank was in the midst of his daily video blog, and many of his goofy fans hung around his forum and talked smack to each other about everything from current events to group projects. it was an awesome community, and although most of us have gone our seperate ways since The Show ended, web 2.0 has somehow still managed to keep many of us connected.

The Vagina Game was one of many activities we made up for each other to practice collaborating on ideas, but in a very peripheral way. Games like this are a great way to get others involved with, well, whatever. Once the communication starts, the skies the limit.

The Vagina game is very simple. Movie/book/song name with one of the words changed to vagina: "Star Wars: Episode V - The Vagina Strikes Back", for example. Just googled "the vagina game" and was amazed at how many people out there like to play it. Heh. I'm on @Twitter quite a bit, and I've found that twitterspace is a great place to get others involved with peripheral silly activities.

I love springing the Vagina Game on my followers, just so we all get to talking about *something*. On the downside, I end up losing some followers, but upside is the followers that hang around end up being the kind of peeple that can handle light hearted humor, even if it does virge on the banal, inane, and risque. Those are my kind of peeps. Life is too damn short to take it so seriously.

RIP Lux Interior, aka Erick Purkhiser 1946 - 2009

This blog post is dedicated to Lux Interior, Poison Ivy, and the music of The Cramps.
Lux Interior, whose real name was Erick Lee Purkhiser, passed away on 4 February at Glendale Memorial Hospital in California at the age of 62. He had suffered from a previously existing heart condition.

Lux, you will be missed greatly. Your mark on this world could not have been made by anyone else. Thank-you for bringing me out of my shell all those many years ago. Listening to the music you made with your wife and the rest of The Cramps showed me that anytime could be a good time, as long as the right music was playing. I learned quickly that there was hardly ever a time that wasn't a good time for The Cramps. I grew up knowing that someday, I too wanted to be a bikini girl with machine guns. I ain't nuthin' but a gorehound, but thats just fine. I could still use my smell of female to lure the most exalted potentate of love to do the dead with me, instead of the usual creature from the black leather lagoon. Now it's not just goo goo muck, because my pussy *can* do the dog. It's going to be a lonesome town without you, and I can't hardly stand it. I've got a fever,but I won't need to find a new kind of kick or ride the drug train to change the way I walk, and I wouldn't want to anyway. Ride that hot rod to heaven, and don't be to tough on St.Peter at the golden gate. He's the only one to bum a smoke from up there I hear.

This opening song in this video is from the very first Cramps album that I ever heard. The song is 'You Got Good Taste' from the album 'Smell of Female', and many a party in my early years were started with these dulcet tones screaming from my overly huge speakers, as if a mating call between the keg beer and my landlords green carpets. Groove on my pretties.

While grasping at factoids of song, dancing and images of the late great Lux Interior tonight, I was reintroduced to one of my original musical passions: Surf Music. In this instance, it's ok to lump together hillbilly, rockabilly, hellbilly, surf punk, mexibilly, psychobilly, garage rock, and plain old everyday surf music. I think that my penchent for this flavor of aural pain was induced at an early age by my mother and father. Pop loved Hank Williams, mom loved The Ventures, the both loved Elvis, and I loved watching them dance to their favorite music on a Saturday morning. Sneaking into my parents closet to play with my fathers candy apple red hollow body Epiphone electric guitar was one of my favorite activities, though sometimes his mandolin drew as much attention.

I found a great radio show out of WPGU 107.1 Champain-Urbana, Il called Surfabilly Freakout. It is exactly what it sounds like. Surf, "*billy", punk, much freaking out. I'm pretty sure the Dj's were "Reverend" Chuck Allen, Jet Sterling, and Chelsea Bandita for the show that I am posting about. Very fun group of people, almost makes me want to move back to Illinois. Almost, but not quite.

I found one other podcast tonight will jumping around the Internet Archives. This one is called Beyond The Wall Of Sleep, and is likely my favorite new podcast, and not because the podcaster(who's name seems to be hidden) did a Lux Interior Memorial show, but because the rest of his podcasts are of a genre he classifies as "shoegazing/dreampop. After skimming through a few of his posts, I decided I will be a regular there.
The 02-07-09 Lux Interior Memorial Show is the most well thought out, professionally crafted tribute to Lux Interior I have heard yet. I was very touched with this podcasters attention to detail in crafting his playlist. The podcaster chose to offer his listeners the option "Scream or Explode" instead of stream/download, and even made the vocals of the podcast in a horror show fashion that would have made Lux proud. If you are going to listen to only one Lux Interior Memorial show, let this be the one.

Shadowed beneath thy hand may we forever stand -- true to thee, O God, and true to our native land.

We truly give thanks for the glorious experience we've shared this day. We pray now, O Lord, for your blessing upon thy servant, Barack Obama, the 44th president of these United States, his family and his administration. He has come to this high office at a low moment in the national and, indeed, the global fiscal climate. But because we know you got the whole world in your hand, we pray for not only our nation, but for the community of nations. Our faith does not shrink, though pressed by the flood of mortal ills.

Expansion type

An optical illusion (also called a visual illusion) is characterized by visually perceived images that differ from objective reality. The information gathered by the eye is processed in the brain to give a percept that does not tally with a physical measurement of the stimulus source. There are three main types: literal optical illusions that create images that are different from the objects that make them, physiological ones that are the effects on the eyes and brain of excessive stimulation of a specific type (brightness, tilt, color, movement), and cognitive illusions where the eye and brain make unconscious inferences.

Rotation and expansion

I've been using Paint Shop Pro 9 for a while now, to create all sorts of digital images that result in multiple interference patterns that fool ones eye into seeing movement where there is none. These types of images have captured my attention since I was a child. I remember my aunts and uncles having fuzzy flack light posters with all sorts strange and wondrous images, many of them designed to give the impression of some sort of movement. When I was a little older, I discovered that I could make similar images with string art, tying string in straight lines on a board to give the impression that there were curves in the design, in spite of all of it being made with straight lines.

"Physiological illusions, such as the afterimages following bright lights or adapting stimuli of excessively longer alternating patterns (contingent perceptual aftereffect), are presumed to be the effects on the eyes or brain of excessive stimulation of a specific type - brightness, tilt, color, movement, etc. The theory is that stimuli have individual dedicated neural paths in the early stages of visual processing, and that repetitive stimulation of only one or a few channels causes a physiological imbalance that alters perception.

The Hermann grid illusion and Mach bands are two illusions that are best explained using a biological approach. Lateral inhibition, where in the receptive field of the retina light and dark receptors compete with one another to become active, has been used to explain why we see bands of increased brightness at the edge of a color difference when viewing Mach bands. Once a receptor is active it inhibits adjacent receptors. This inhibition creates contrast, highlighting edges. In the Hermann grid illusion the gray spots appear at the intersection because of the inhibitory response which occurs as a result of the increased dark surround." - From this wikipedia article.

The types of images I really enjoy attempting to make employ techniques that cause the viewer to experience both expansion and depth. Other types of movement that can be perceived with these types of illusions is rotation, collapse and flicker.

This allows humans to perform reflexive acts like catching a fly ball and to maneuver smoothly through a crowd. ^[3] Illusions occur when our brains attempt to perceive the future, and those perceptions don't match reality. Found this picture from a few months ago. I was seriously flirting with all of @Twitter, but one person specifically, who asked me for a naughty pic after sending me a few. I had very bad pink-eye at the time, and I was staying w/ my sister, so it was difficult to do, and she wouldn't help. She has opinions about nude pictures of my being posted online, so I had to do it myself. Not that I minded, but I was very afraid to drop my HTC Touch in the bubble bath. I couldn't see, was very slippery, it was cold, and the smile was very difficult to come by! lol. I cropped some of my face because with the way my eyes were looking from the pink eye, it made me look corpse like. Even though the picture is blurred and slightly in motion and doesn't quite look exactly like me, I still think it is somewhat artistic, and even marginally titillating.

Earlier this week, I began experimenting in earnest with A.viary's suite of creative web applications. To be honest, after using Picknik a few times, I wasn't really expecting very much usability beyond photo cropping and contrast and saturation adjustments. I am happy to say that I found much more usability I than initially expected.

Phoenix, is the image editor that is the main building block in A.viary's arsenal, I have found has more capabilities than you could shake a stick at, given that you are the type of person to taunt web applications with the local flora. (Occasionally, I am that type.) Unlike Picknik, who's main feature seems to be it's various sets of filters to add effects to your photos, Phoenix has the ability to manipulate your images with layers, add text, smudge, sharpen, blur, liquefy, dodge, burn, most of the capabilities that one would find as basic functions in most image editors that professional artist and web designers would use. Very refreshing in an online application that will run in your browser. When I first received my invitation to use A.viary many months ago, I was using Firefox religiously. Now that Google Chrome has hit the scene, it has pretty much become my default browser. A.viary seems to run quite easily in Chrome, as it did in Firefox. Even though A.viary is a flash based app, I didn't mind too much, other than the lack of a right click menu. That is the one thing that is going to be the most difficult for me to get used to. Right click menus are my link to manipulating most applications that I use on a regular basis, and the lack of that menu means I have to train myself to think in a way I am not used to when using A.viary. Honestly, it has hindered my creative process to some degree, but that does not mean that with more use, learning what to use instead of the right click context menu is impossible, it just means that until that time arrives for me, it's going to be a tad more unwieldy.

I really didn't intend this entry to be a critique of A.viary, I really just wanted to show some of the work I have done while using A.viary. So I will.

This series started quite accidentally when a friend of mine asked me for a photo of myself in the middle of the night, and the camera in my HTC kept only allowing me to produce dark and blurry photos. It may have been the hour (3 a.m.) in all honesty, but I really wanted to send my friend a photo, and also wanted him to be able to tell it was me. Since I'm using someone else's pc at the moment, I wasn't able to install and use Paint Shop Pro 9.0, which is my image editor of choice, to adjust the photos so my friend could at least make out my basic form and features. I needed an online application, and Picknik just wouldn't do the trick. I remembered A.viary's beta, and decided to see if I could use it for the purpose I needed at the moment. I was surprised to see that A.viary had added another application to it's suite since I had last been there, Peacock. Peacock is a “visual laboratory” that has many functions that are extremely useful to digital artist. It can be used as a pattern generator, it has many filter functions, and allows image remixing in ways I had never considered. I would have to say that it is the equivalent of Sony's Acid Pro, but for images. I'm a creative type at heart, so comparing sound to images makes complete sense to me.

Using the pen and ink filter, and altering the image colors, gave me these results:

Finally, I closed Phoenix, and used a few filters in Peacock to create one of my favorite recent images, a fairly original self-portrait.

Even though I do have my reservations about the privacy aspects of cloud computing, I fully intend to to embrace many of these online image editing applications for my own creative processes. When I can't play my guitar, I'll snap my fingers and sing, and when I cannot use my preferred native image editing software, than I will jump on that cloud, just to let the juices flow, and still get the job done. I am finding that with cloud computing, I can still whistle in color!

Cherish the past endeavors

Artwork from my past has a way of reminding me of past goals, past dreams, and my current position in the process of self-actualization.Many of these pieces are from projects that I had seen as a way to transform myself from mu mundane existence into a world that sparkled and shined with the immediacy of my own emotions. Occasionally this state actually came into being, and bringing my projects to some manner of fruition was enough to spur me along the path to my own dreams.

I still do not feel as if I am self-actualized, but I am on the right path to get there. Like my art, my life is all about the process. I may not really end up becoming The All-Being, Mistress of Time and Space, but while on the road to coming as close to that state as possible, I get to live my life with flourishes, glitter, sarcasm and smiles, and feel like I am still living a part of the dream.

-One who dreams; Someone whose beliefs are far from realistic.

I believe the first and the last search results have been meant to describe someone like myself. Someone who uses their art as a basis for planning their life. That's o.k., because as many of us know from personal experience, with out the dream, the fantasy will never come true. I, for one do not believe in "miracles" in the typical understanding of the word. Miracles only happen for those that have given up expecting the impossible;a long ago.

I expect what may seem to be impossible from myself, and that has helped me to teach others that even if it may seem like what we really want is out of our reach, we will never even have the chance to find out unless we take the chance on having the dream in the first place. I see dreamers as those that WILL make the impossible possible. Call me a dreamer. Go ahead. I will wear that badge with the honor it deserves.

Cherish the Fractals

Hey chilluns. Is the crack in the psyche of The Mistress of Time and Space becoming even more evident recently? If it has, there is good cause. Bending shapes and colors with numbers can be quite brainalicious if one is not careful. I am rarely careful, but the results are almost always worth the risks.

These images I originally posted on my Buzznet collection entitled Holographic Consciousness. Catchy title huh? Yeah, I thought so too. Although many other artist have learned to bend fractals even more creatively than I, I am still somewhat impressed with the results of my recent labors to learn to use fractals as another tool in my quest to understand human consciousness by looking inside my own consciousness. I am pleased that the end results are pleasing to view, but the real joy is in the process of creativity that teaches me more about myself and our species as a whole than almost anything else I have engaged in, save for those 4 years I spent using LSD. It's never about the destination, it's always about the trip, even when the only scenery is you.

Emotional purge. Blech. Thanks to the Universe for the lack of an aftertaste with those. I am a Tribute to all humans who have come before me, and those to follow. I do believe. AS this is my belief, I am the "Greatest Tribute" that their is, being the only one in this body squawking about the greatness of humanity. Of course, greatness comes at many levels. I could use this time to spew emotional baggage at the Internet, but I having thrown out my baggage this morning, I guess all I can do is simply to remind myself, and anyone else who happens to be paying attention that we, as humans, can change anything we decide to. And all it takes is a decision. Everything in our existence begins with a thought....we, as individuals, even began with only a thought..granted, it was someone else's, but that is the testament to the power we all inherently carry with ourselves every single day, weather or not we acknowledge that power or not, it is there. It is in our cells. Our hearts. Our souls. We cannot make it go away, and if we choose not to steer it consciously, we will control it subconsciously. Kinda like driving at night with the headlights off. Not real cool. People get hurt that way, other people can be killed by our own ignorance of that choice to "drive" our lives with out looking where we are driving. This is not the way I want to live my life. in spite of not being completely aware of that choice within myself prior to this moment in time, I am aware of it now. All it takes to change a life is to change a thought...we change our minds a hundred times a day....and there we go....the lights are back on.
